New Officers Elected at June Membership Meeting

July Book Club: A Practical Guide to Prayer
On July 24, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson held an online discussion of Five Pillars of the Spiritual Life: A Practical Guide to Prayer for Active People (Ignatius) by Jesuit Father Robert Spitzer.  Father Spitzer, president of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., outlines five essential ways for even the busiest person to have a better prayer life.

Knights Experience the Universality of the Church at World Youth Day
College Knights kneel during the July 20 papal Mass at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia, where they camped out with 235,000 other World Youth Day pilgrims.  "It was the most magnificent display of the universality of our Church I think I have ever experienced in my life," said Grover Green, past grand knight of University of St. Thomas Council 13940.

Knights Co-Sponsor Pro-Life Conference in New Jersey July 25-27
Supreme Chaplain William Lori and Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson will be part of a distinguished lineup of speakers on issues of family, social justice and the right to life at a three-day conference entitled "Life, Justice and Family: Partners in the New Evangelization."  It will be held July 25-27 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
49th International Eucharistic Congress
Quebec City's historic Plains of Abraham was the setting for the closing Mass of the 49th International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) June 22.   Thousands of the faithful filled the former battlefield turned national park and cheered the procession of hundreds of priests and members of the hierarchy, and applauded.
'A Civilization of Love' Has People Talking About the Power of Faith
Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson held an online discussion of his new book, A Civilization of Love.  This New York Times best-seller, develops themes - hope, Catholic social values and the power of faith to transform culture - that Pope Benedict addressed during his U.S. visit.

Knights Sponsor Chicago Conference on Abortion's Effects on Fathers
The Knights of Columbus and the Archdiocese of Chicago's Office for Evangelization are co-sponsoring a national conference to focus on the effects of abortion on men whose children have been aborted in Chicago on Sept. 8 and 9.

Like the Church, the Knights of Columbus draws its strength from the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith and the model for our acts of Christian charity.  In the August issue of Columbia, relive the 49th International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec last June, in which the Knights played an important part. We also highlight some unique examples of K of C charity and celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's landmark document on women.

This summer a great event in the life of the Church - the 49th International Eucharistic Congress - occurred in Quebec City.  Participants came from around the world to celebrate and affirm the theme of the congress, "The Eucharist: Gift of God for the Life of the World."

126th Supreme Convention in Quebec
The 126th Supreme Convention will be held at the Quebec Convention Centre in Quebec City Aug. 5-7. Delegates should arrive no later than Monday, Aug. 4.
Television Coverage of 126th Supreme Convention
Several Catholic media outlets will broadcast live coverage of the supreme convention from Quebec City.  The Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), Salt and Light Television and CatholicTV, will present coverage of the Mass, opening session (including the supreme knight's annual report), and States Dinner Tuesday, Aug. 5.  EWTN Radio and The Catholic Channel (Sirius Satellite Radio) will also be on site, providing live interviews and programming.  Coverage of the event will be in English, but EWTN will broadcast Spanish simultaneous translation and S+L will have some French language commentary.
A.M. Best Affirms Knights of Columbus Rating of A++ (Superior)
For the 33rd consecutive year, A.M. Best Company has given the Knights of Columbus its highest financial strength rating, A++ (Superior). A.M. Best is a worldwide rating and information agency, which conducts in-depth analyses and issues reports about the fiscal stability of insurance companies.
Knights Provide Memorial of Papal Mass at Yankee Stadium
Yankee Stadium now displays a permanent memorial of Pope Benedict XVI's Mass there during his visit to the U.S. in April.  The plaque was commissioned and donated by the Knights of Columbus.  For news stories, photographs and video clips of the Papal trip, visit our special website devoted entirely to the events of April 15-20. Supreme Council Sends Aid to Philippines in Wake of Typhoon Frank
The Knights of Columbus has sent $25,000 to the Caritas Filipinas Foundation to assist in recovery efforts following Typhoon Frank (Fengshen), which struck the Philippines in mid-June.  At least 598 people died and hundreds of thousands were displaced because of the storm, which triggered widespread flooding and mudslides.
Vatican Approves Decree of 'Heroic Virtue'
Pope Benedict XVI declared Father Michael J. McGivney venerable March 15, approving a decree of "Heroic Virtue" for the parish priest who founded the Knights of Columbus.  This step significantly advances Father McGivney's cause for sainthood.
Editor Robert Leeney Dies at Age 92
Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson on July 8 offered "heartfelt condolences" to the family of Robert Leeney, the retired editor of the New Haven Register, a 27-year member of the Knights of Columbus who died Sunday at the age of 92.
